Lap of Nature is an independent publication for people who camp in the United States, whether that means a tent in a state park, a free site on public land, an RV with hookups or a cabin by a lake.

We answer the questions that come up before every trip:

  • Where should we stay? Campgrounds, RV parks, cabins and glamping, state by state and park by park.
  • What will it cost, and how do we get a site? Fees, reservation windows, first-come sites and passes, explained plainly.
  • What are the rules? Dispersed camping, BLM land, fire restrictions and permits, from the agencies that set them.

How we work

Fees, seasons and rules come from park agencies and operators, and every guide lists its sources. You can read the details in our editorial policy.

We pay for the site through affiliate commissions: when you book a stay or buy gear through some of our links, the company may pay us. That never changes what we recommend, and every page with such links says so. See our affiliate disclosure.

A note on the name

This site is not a tour operator and does not sell trips. It is not affiliated with any business that previously used this domain.
