Big Sur is short on RV hookups and long on narrow road. Three private campgrounds next to Pfeiffer Big Sur, on the Big Sur River, have water and electric: Big Sur Campground & Cabins, Riverside and Fernwood. The state park next door has a dump station but no hookups, and the south coast campgrounds are dry camping. We couldn't confirm a single sewer hookup anywhere in Big Sur, so arrive with empty tanks and plan to dump at Pfeiffer Big Sur or Fernwood.

Hookup sites in the river valley
Big Sur Campground & Cabins
The best bet for a big rig: select sites take trailers and motorhomes up to 40 feet, with water and electric hookups and a central dump station. It also has cabins, a camp store and laundry.
- Up to 5 people per site; $5 per extra person, $5 per pet a night, $15 for a second vehicle (not every site fits two; call first), plus a $30 amenities fee per stay and a community impact fee.
- Check-in at noon, check-out at 11 a.m. Changes and cancellations up to 14 days before arrival, with a $25 fee.
- Book by phone at 831-667-2322 or online.
Riverside Campground & Cabins
Small RV sites along the river with 20-amp electric and water. Riverside's RV page says its sites take rigs up to 30 feet (its home page says 25 for select sites), so confirm your length when you book. It has no sewer hookups and no dump station. One vehicle per site, and a second one must park off the grounds; pets $5 each a night, plus a resort fee (it covers the hot showers) and a community impact fee. Phone 831-667-2414.
Fernwood Resort
RV sites with water and 30-amp electric, for motorhomes up to 30 feet and trailers up to 28. Hot showers, a general store and a dump station ($20 if you use it).
- Base rate $70–$145 a night for 2 people and 1 vehicle; $5 per extra person, up to 6 people and 2 vehicles per site.
- Book up to a year ahead to the day.
- From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the electric sites across the bridge can't be reserved for RVs.
- Cell signal is spotty in Big Sur, but Fernwood says you can find it in parts of the campground.
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
The park's campground has 189 tent and RV sites on the Big Sur River, with no hookups. Motorhomes up to 32 feet and trailers up to 27 feet fit, and everything, including awnings, pop-outs and slideouts, must stay inside the parking boundary. The dump station is free for campers and $10 for everyone else, and there's fresh water at the campground.
- $50 a night, $60 for a premium riverfront site; seniors 62+ get $2 off.
- En Route RV: self-contained RVs can park overnight for one night at $60.
- Generators run only from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; quiet hours are 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Book on ReserveCalifornia up to six months ahead; sites fill that far out even in winter, and can't be booked within 48 hours of arrival.
The park reopened on October 16, 2026, after the Timber Fire; several trails stay closed.
South coast: Limekiln and Kirk Creek
Limekiln State Park is for small rigs only: motorhomes up to 24 feet, trailers up to 15 (another State Parks page says 24 for trailers; confirm with the park). No hookups and no dump station; $50 a night, cash only. Its beach-side sites are closed in fall 2026 during a geotechnical survey of the Limekiln Bridge.
Kirk Creek, the Forest Service campground on the ocean bluff, allows RVs up to 30 feet, with no hookups and no water. The Forest Service has listed it, and Plaskett Creek, as closed since the August 2026 fires; check its page before you plan around it.
Inland, Ponderosa and Nacimiento campgrounds and Nacimiento-Fergusson Road are closed by a fire closure order through January 31, 2027. Even when open, Recreation.gov's notice for Ponderosa says RVs are not recommended on Nacimiento-Fergusson from Highway 1; RVs come in from Highway 101.
No RVs at Ventana
Ventana Campground is tent-only: no RVs, trailers, pop-ups or camper vans, and no vehicles over 20 feet. If you want to sleep under canvas without towing anything, see Ventana Big Sur glamping.
Driving Highway 1 in an RV
Highway 1 is open through Big Sur from Carmel to Cambria; Regent's Slide reopened on January 14, 2026. This fall, Caltrans runs one-way traffic control at Rocky Creek Bridge, between Point Sur and Big Sur, and at Mud Creek on weekday mornings, so expect waits. Pull into turnouts to let traffic pass, and don't plan to sleep in one: Monterey County bans camping along the Highway 1 right-of-way (see Big Sur dispersed camping). Check Caltrans QuickMap or 1-800-427-7623 before you go.
For tent sites and the hike-in camps, see Big Sur campgrounds.
